Barnes, Isabel J. (Cornell University, Ithaca, N. Y.), H. W. Seeley, and P. J. VanDeMark. Nutrition of Streptococcus bovis in relation to dextran formation. J. Bacteriol. 82:85-93. 1961.-Three nutritional types of Streptococcus bovis were encountered. Minimal media for their growth are described. Transferable growth in defined media was always accompanied by dextran production and the nutrition for dextran production could not be distinguished from the minimal nutritional requirements of the organism for growth. Measurable, free CO(2) was evolved from a complex medium during the growth of S. bovis. Several compounds were found to replace partially the CO(2) requirement of the species. When fractured cell preparations containing S. bovis dextran were employed as antigens, rabbits failed to yield sera which would precipitate S. bovis or leuconostoc dextrans.

Transglucosidase activity of rumen strains of Streptococcus bovis; structure of the dextran produced from sucrose.
Many extensive studies have been made on the glucose polymers, known as dextrans, whichare produced from sucrose by the transglucosidase activity of species in the genus Leucomostoc. Less work has been described, however, on similar polysaccharides produced from sucrose by streptococcal species. Niven, Smiley & Sherman (1941) reported that various strains of Streptococcus bovis, of unrecorded o...

Bacteriol. 86:1079-1083. 1963.-Dextran synthesis was found to be temperature-dependent in Lactobacillus strain RWM-13. Dextran was not formed above 37 C, although growth of cells occurred up to 42 C. Logarithmically growing cells transferred from 30 ...
متن کاملThe Polysaccharides Synthesized by Strepto- Coccus Salivarius and Strepto-
In a previous paper (1) it was reported that certain non-hemolytic streptococci from the human throat are capable of synthesizing large amounts of a carbohydrate from sucrose and raffinose. These organisms seem to be similar to those studied by Oerskov and Poulsen (2). When grown on the surface of agar containing 5 per cent sucrose or raffinose, large mucoid colonies are produced which are abou...
متن کاملRegulation of Mycobacterium bovis BCG and foreign body granulomas in mice by the Bcg gene.
Natural bactericidal resistance to Mycobacterium bovis BCG is under the control of a single gene, designated Bcg. Lung granuloma formation in susceptible (Bcgs) and resistant (Bcgr) mice was studied in two sets of Bcg-congenic systems, namely, the BALB/c (Bcgs)-C.D2 (BALB/c.Bcgr) pair and the B10.A (Bcgs)-B10.Ar (Bcgr) pair, by using BCG as well as foreign body granuloma-inducing agents (dextra...
متن کاملSemi-quantitative analysis of Ruminococcus flavefaciens, Fibrobacter succinogenes and Streptococcus bovis in the equine large intestine using real-time polymerase chain reaction.
There is a need to further our understanding of the role that the equine hindgut ecosystem plays in digestive processes and diseases. The aim of the present study was to utilise the real-time PCR technique to determine the abundance of candidate cellulolytic (Ruminococcus flavefaciens; Fibrobacter succinogenes) and non-cellulolytic (Streptococcus bovis) bacteria in lumen contents from the caecu...
